Meter Point Reference Number
The 6-to-10-digit number that uniquely identifies a UK gas supply point on the central industry database.
An MPRN is the gas-side equivalent of an MPAN — the unique identifier for a UK gas supply point. It is held on the gas industry's central database (operated by Xoserve) and is used by suppliers, transporters and meter operators to coordinate registrations, transfers and metering work.
Unlike an MPAN, the MPRN is a single-line number — typically six to ten digits — and does not encode profile or time-switch information directly; gas profiling sits on a different framework based on annual quantity (AQ) and end-user category.
- Found on every UK gas bill, near the top.
- Required for any switch, change of tenancy or contract renewal.
- Linked to a SOQ (Supply Offtake Quantity) for larger sites and an AQ (Annual Quantity) for smaller ones.
For non-domestic customers, validating that the registered occupier on the MPRN matches the trading entity is one of the most common deemed-contract triggers we see. A pub that changes tenant, a care home that changes registered provider or a factory that goes through a corporate restructure can all leave the MPRN registered to the predecessor for months unless the change-of-tenancy notice is served promptly.
