MPRN decoder
Paste your gas Meter Point Reference Number and we’ll validate the structure in your browser. The MPRN is the unique identifier for a gas supply point — find it on any gas bill or supplier portal.
What is an MPRN?
The Meter Point Reference Number (also called the M-number or gas supply number) uniquely identifies a gas meter point in Great Britain. Like the electricity MPAN, the MPRN travels with the property, not the supplier — so when you switch supplier, the MPRN stays the same.
MPRNs are 6 to 10 digits long and, unlike the MPAN, do not carry a check digit. The number itself is the unique identifier. The opening digits broadly indicate the geographic region but they do not deterministically map to a Gas Distribution Network the way MPAN distributor codes do — so this tool validates structure, then helps you identify the correct GDN by region.
Where to find it
Look on any gas bill or supplier portal for a panel labelled “MPRN”, “Gas supply number” or marked with a G. It is often printed above the QR code on a paper bill, or directly below the meter serial number on the meter itself. If you cannot find it, your supplier or the Meter Number Helpline on 0870 608 1524 can confirm it.
Find your Gas Distribution Network
Great Britain’s gas pipes are operated by four Gas Distribution Networks (GDNs) across eight regions. The GDN owns and maintains the pipes that carry gas to your meter; your supplier is whoever bills you for the gas. Unlike the MPAN, the leading digits of an MPRN do not deterministically identify the GDN — the most reliable way to confirm yours is by postcode.
The official Xoserve-backed lookup at findmysupplier.energy accepts a UK postcode and returns the registered GDN and current gas supplier for any meter point.
| Gas Distribution Network | Typical regions | Customer site |
|---|---|---|
| Cadent Gas | West Midlands, East of England, North London, North West | cadentgas.com |
| SGN (Scotia Gas Networks) | Scotland, Southern England (Sussex, Kent, Hampshire, Surrey) | www.sgn.co.uk |
| Northern Gas Networks | North East England, Yorkshire, Northern Cumbria | www.northerngasnetworks.co.uk |
| Wales & West Utilities | South West England, Wales | www.wwutilities.co.uk |
All four GDNs route gas leaks and emergencies through the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. There is no separate per-network number for emergencies.
Disclaimer
This tool performs a structural check on the MPRN format only. It does not confirm that a supply is live, that the meter is in service, that the meter is correctly registered, or that you are the registered customer of record. For a definitive check, raise a query with your gas supplier or use the Xoserve supplier finder linked above. For metering disputes, billing problems, or transfer issues, our consultancy can review the case under the principles of the Ofgem TPI Code of Practice and the Retail Energy Code.
