Water company finder
Enter a UK postcode and we will tell you which water company serves the area, with the emergency line, leak reporting number, customer service number and the formal complaints route. This is the wholesaler that owns the pipes — for non-household retail switching, see our water services page.
Why this matters
In England and Wales there are around eleven regional water and wastewater companies plus a handful of water-only providers such as Affinity. Each operates as a regional monopoly under an Ofwat licence, and customers cannot choose their household supplier — your postcode determines which company you are billed by.
Knowing the right wholesaler is the first step for any leak report, supply interruption, billing query or sewerage complaint. Calling the wrong company wastes time and, in an emergency, can delay the response.
Scottish Water serves the whole of Scotland and is publicly owned, so it falls outside the Ofwat / WATRS regime — escalations there go to the Scottish Public Services Ombudsman.
This is a wholesaler lookup, not a retailer one
Every UK property is connected to a single regional wholesaler that owns the pipes, treatment works and reservoirs. Households are billed by that wholesaler directly and cannot switch supplier — the household water market is not open to competition.
Non-household premises (offices, shops, factories, schools) sit under the Open Water market opened in April 2017. The wholesaler is still fixed by location, but the customer can choose any licensed retailer in England for billing, meter reads and customer service. Switching retailer typically requires SPID-level information from the central market operator MOSL.
If you are a business looking to switch retailer or recover overpayments on a non-household water account, our consultants can run a whole-of-market review.
Sources and limits
- Source data: published Ofwat licence-area maps and each company’s own service-area page. Contact numbers are the headline lines listed on each company’s contact-us page.
- Granularity: postcode-area level only (the letters before the digits). For street-level certainty, always cross-check against your most recent water bill.
- Coverage: the twelve largest wholesalers across England, Wales and Scotland. Smaller water-only companies (e.g. Bristol Water, Portsmouth Water, SES Water, South East Water, South Staffs Water) are not yet listed — we plan to add these.
- Not advice: contact details change. In a genuine emergency (no water, sewage backing up, burst main) always confirm the number on the live company website before relying on it.
Send us one bill. We'll send back every overcharge — and the cheapest legitimate replacement.
Whether you run a Mayfair restaurant group or rent a flat in Salford, the audit is the same and the fee is the same: nothing, unless we save you money.
