Supply Point Identifier
The unique identifier for a non-household water supply point in England, used by retailers and wholesalers since the 2017 market opening.
A SPID is the unique reference for a non-household water or wastewater supply point in the English competitive market. It was created when the non-household water market opened to competition in April 2017 and is held on the central market system operated by MOSL (Market Operator Services Ltd).
Every non-household water customer has at least one SPID per service:
- A water SPID for the incoming clean water supply.
- A sewerage SPID for foul and surface-water drainage.
- Sometimes a separate trade effluent SPID where Section 118 consent is in force.
SPIDs sit at the meter or premises level and persist through changes of retailer — switching retailer does not change the SPID, only the licensed entity that bills against it. As with MPAN and MPRN validation, confirming that the SPID is registered to the correct trading entity is the first step in any water-side audit. Misallocations are a common source of double-billing after a change of tenancy or premises ownership.
